When DC Wasn't PC
This is an official photograph of the execution of Henry Wirz in November of 1865, a mere stones throw from the U.S. Capitol. Wirz was a native of Switzerland who came to the U.S., and joined the Confederate Army. He presided over Camp Sumter, near Andersonville, Georgia, the most brutal and notorious Prisoner of War camp in Civil War History. Although only a handful of War Crimes cases were brought against Confederate Officers, they became the foundation for modern War Crimes prosecution.

The Little Scholar, 1
In the days of the Daguerreotypes, many parents had their daughters sit for the camera accompanied by books or the trappings of scholarship. Many of these pictures are among the finest children's portraits from the era. This is the first in a series.

Helen Mack was brimming with energy and talent. Most of her movies were "B Pictures", but she managed to share leads with some of the biggest stars in pictures. My favorite Helen Mack picture is "Son of Kong".

Portrait of Denise

Edited from a Daguerreotype, the portrait is from around 1850. The subjects apparel would have been probably considered "retro" even at that time.

Belles of the Ball
This was derived from an old Daguerreotype. It's not a great picture, of course, but the natural expression of the subjects is truly remarkable, in spite of the many seconds they had to sit before the camera with a "frozen" face .
