When DC Wasn't PC
This is an official photograph of the execution of Henry Wirz in November of 1865, a mere stones throw from the U.S. Capitol. Wirz was a native of Switzerland who came to the U.S., and joined the Confederate Army. He presided over Camp Sumter, near Andersonville, Georgia, the most brutal and notorious Prisoner of War camp in Civil War History. Although only a handful of War Crimes cases were brought against Confederate Officers, they became the foundation for modern War Crimes prosecution.
